Overview
A company is one person's decisions, compounded. When that person is depleted, the decisions get worse before anyone notices, and by the time it shows in the numbers it has been true for months.
Most advisors treat this as off-limits, or hand it to a coach. I treat it as part of the mandate, because the quality of the decisions is the work, and the state of the person making them is not separable from it.
This is not therapy and it is not coaching. It is an operator who has run companies while tired, under pressure, and out of road, and who knows what that does to judgement.
What I Do
This is not a separate product. It sits inside a strategy or interim mandate, and it comes up when it is relevant, not on a schedule.
What it covers:
1:1 sessions with whoever is carrying the weight: founder, CEO, or the executive holding the hardest part
The conversation nobody on your team can have with you, because they report to you
Decision review under load: what you are avoiding, what you are deciding too fast, and why
Separating the business problem from the fatigue that is making it look bigger than it is
Workload and delegation structure: what only you can do, and what you are doing anyway
Leadership team dynamics, including the one conversation between two people that is blocking the company
Preparing for the conversations that keep getting postponed: a co-founder, an investor, a departure
Succession and handover planning, including the version where you step back
Because it is built into the mandate, it is not billed as an extra and there is nothing to add on.
How I Work
It starts inside the ordinary work. We are reviewing a decision, and at some point it becomes clear that the decision is not the problem.
I will name it once, plainly, and then it is your call whether we go there. If you want to keep it strictly on the business, we keep it strictly on the business, and that is a legitimate answer. None of this is mandatory and none of it gets pushed.
What makes it work is that it happens in the same cadence as everything else. Weekly, with the same person, who also knows your numbers, your board, and your market. You are not briefing a second advisor on your own company, and you are not explaining the context twice.
Twenty years of endurance sport gave me practical ground on focus, recovery, and sustained output under load. I use it where it is useful and leave it alone where it is not.
Why It Matters
Draw the chain: the client, me, the relationship, the project. The link that breaks is almost never the project. It is the two in the middle.
The same holds inside a company. The strategy is rarely what fails. What fails is a decision nobody makes, a conversation nobody has, and a leader who has carried it alone long enough to stop trusting their own read.
Expertise is getting cheaper every year. Judgement under pressure is not. That is the part worth protecting, and it is the part almost no advisor will touch.
What You Can Expect
Founders, CEOs and executives working with Szel & Partners typically see:
Decisions made on time rather than postponed
A clear line between the business problem and the state you are in while solving it
One person who sees both, in the same conversation
Fewer decisions reversed three weeks later
A workload structure you can hold for a year, not a quarter
Honest preparation for the conversations you have been avoiding
Succession and handover handled as a plan rather than an emergency
If this is the part you want left alone, say so and it stays alone. It is available, not imposed.
